The two ladies and Oswald left the Spooner house and stood out on the lane beside the dining room window.

Churchill peered in through the open window and gazed at the sheet of paper on the table. “It’s easy to see how someone might have slipped their arm in through here and snatched the recipe up off the table.” She stepped up to the open window and reached in to grab the piece of paper. She was just about to pick it up when she felt a sharp stinging sensation across her knuckles.

“No you don’t! Not this time!”

“Ow!” Churchill clasped her sore hand and peered in through the window.

Mrs Spooner stood on the other side with a clenched jaw and a knitting needle in her hand. “Oh, Mrs Churchill!” she exclaimed, her face aghast. “It’s you!” She lowered the knitting needle.

“Of course it’s me! Who did you think it was?”

“I had no idea! I decided I’d better be on my guard these days.”

“It was just me recreating the scene of the crime.”

“Oh, that’s what you were doing.”

“Yes.” Churchill rubbed her hand again. “We’re just heading off to find some witnesses.”
